the rugby ref
I got to know rugby pretty late at the age of 24. The matches of the 2003 World Cup were (finally) being broadcasted in Brazil and that made me wonder if there was a rugby team in my hometown Porto Alegre.
As a matter of fact, there was! I am grateful for the day I decided to visit a training of Charrua Rugby Clube and got to know rugby, a sport of ruffians played by gentlemen.
I fell in love with the game, but the game apparently did not fall in love with me. I did play for a couple of years for Charrua, Lanceiros Negros (Canoas - Brazil) and Grashof (Essen - Germany), but I soon enough decided it would be better to invest my efforts onto refereeing.
And what a great decision it was! The first refereeing course I attended was in London in 2005. My refereeing career developed quite quickly in the first two years, but I did have to drastically reduce my refereeing activities after my emigration to Germany and due to family, work and studies.
Since mid-2016 my studies are over and the kids are a bit older, so I decided it was time for a comeback. I have to basically start from scratch, but let's see how far I can go this time.
